About Northumbria Gems

beginnings...

I launched Northumbria Gems first website in 2010, inspired after trying out jewellery-making with local ‘gems’ – British pebbles, gemstones and sea glass, collected over many years along the north-east coast of England, near to my home. I began cutting cabochons for rings and pendants from the natural stone, and thus began my journey as an independent jewellery maker.

Prospecting with family in the Gemfields of Queensland, Australia, for amethyst, sapphires and smokey quartz, inspired my interest in geology and gemstones at a young age. My father began gem-cutting using our finds and Northumbria Gems continues a family tradition.

a 'piece of Northumbria'...

A favourite part of my work is collecting gemstones amongst Northumberland’s wild, remote hills, and sea glass along our lovely coastline. I aim to bring elements of the region into my jewellery designs or in an actual 'piece of Northumbria’. The nature, landscapes, history and industrial heritage of my region can inform the themes, shapes and textures of designs, and as reference I take photographs and make sketches.

I handcraft natural garnet, fluorite and Whitby jet, too, and my father cuts and facets other varieties of gemstone, including Queensland sapphire.

Silversmithing and glass techniques, increasingly reflected in my silver and fused glass jewellery designs, bring the opportunity for further shapes, colours and textures.

Northumbria Gems' customers...

My jewellery is sent to customers in Britain and across the world, who buy pieces to wear themselves, or as gifts for friends or family, including as a reminder of connections to the region. Customers welcome finding jewellery handmade in the United Kingdom, ethically-made, with options of locally-sourced materials. I am committed to excellent customer service, with many years’ experience from running my websites and through other online selling platforms.

The materials in my jewellery lend themselves to beautiful and unusual jewellery – a pendant, pair of earrings, a ring or brooch, each with its own story…
